Waikiki Surfing with Turtles

Hawaii is the best place for beginner surfers. Surfing in Hawaii you can meet Hawaiian green sea turtle, or Honu, is a symbol of good luck in the form of a guardian spirit, or Amakua. It is the largest hard-shelled sea turtle in the world, reaching lengths of four feet and weights over 300 pounds.

These turtles are believed to improve the health of seagrass beds and associated microhabitats. They will graze the beds, taking off the tops of leaf blades, while avoiding the roots. The seagrass will grow healthier and faster with a daily trim! Learn about their diet.

Population declines are mainly due to the harvest of their eggs and meat for human consumption. Fibropapilloma (also known as FP) is believed to be connected to ocean pollution, has greatly affected their populations.

When a swell is big turtles head away from the shore. The calmer the day, surfing in Waikiki beach, the more likely you are to have a turtle encounter. 

To swim with a turtle is magic. To watch them bask in the sun is calming. While you meet them, don’t touch them, keep your distance so the turtles remain undisturbed and hang around you for a long time. Consider yourself lucky enough that these beautiful creatures allow you to surf with them. Don’t push your luck by invading their personal space.
